OUR OWN AL WHITE

AUGUST DRAG RACE REPORT.

Hi fellow ROAD KINGS. This report is kind of weird for me, as I [Al White] am going to be writing my own reports from now on, as my former writer, friend, and crew member, Norm will not be attending many of my races. That sounded funny, he is still my friend, and when he can make it, he will be at some of the races, “SO HERE I GO. I will try to give you the facts without emotion, up or down, but you will probably be able to read between the lines. As stated in the past, I have been playing with some guys that have a pro type set-up in this OUTLAW class, BLOWERS, turbochargers, and nitrous. They carry spare engines, trans and rear-ends, etc. They are able to push the envelope pretty far, as and example at the race before last this guy Rick, changed
engines between rounds.

I tell all this so you will understand the odds against us going in, but I love a challenge, and I have decided to be a thorn in the number one and two guys side in this Outlaw 10.5 class. Remember the limiting factor is we all have to have the same 10.5 TIRE. So off to Phoenix we go for a night race at old LACR’s Bernie himself, who says HI to all his OLD ROAD KING POTTY LANE RACERS. It was 109 degrees during the day and a cool 100 at midnight. We started racing at 8 P.M. The track temp had cooled to a manageable 133 degrees. The G.T.O. went down the track each qualifying run without an issue, qualifying #4 in the GAS class and #2 in Outlaw, thats not a misprint, #2 In Outlaw 10.5. The G.T.O. went down that hot track on that HOT AUGUST NIGHT, and only the turbo car was faster in Outlaw, this guy has 2800 HORSE POWER!  Day 2.

Eliminations did not start well, as I went DEAD RED by .020. The Gas class was done, even though the car loves to run in the 7 second range I continue to be much faster to react on race day. Well I was a little sad until I got into the semi finals in the Outlaw class. But I drew the guy Rick who I have raced twice, and lost both times. His is one of the two record holders in the class. I had out-qualified him on all my runs the day before, but this was race day. I joined this class for this exact set of circumstances, a HOT track, small tire and the other guy with too much nitrous. All I could think about was “don't red light,” so of course I was late, a 0106 to RICKS .036. He left perfect and so did I. Both cars hooked and he was just a touch in front, but when his nitrous kicked in, he broke loose and he never caught me, a 4.89 to his 5.09. I was in my second final in the first three races. I was on cloud 9. The finale was a hoot, as I had a flat front tire that I did not notice until being called to the lanes, if you like I will tell that story at the meeting. There I was in the final against the turbo car of the current record holder. He has run 4.42 in the eight and 6.60 in the quarter. His name is Doug and I was his new best friend, because I had taken out his arch rival, Rick the round before.

They are the points leader, just a few points apart at any time. I am currently 3rd in the points, and I missed the first two races. Anyway, I had a .008 light and Doug has a .116, which is not bad for a turbo car. I was ahead for a while, but my 4.89 was not going to beat his fantastic 4.52. I have some plans for next year to find a few hundred more horses, and maybe get to a 4.65 - 4.70. As always the food was great, the beer was cold, and the friends are old and irreplaceable

Your friend and fellow racer, Al White

July
Al White and his trustie band of crazies went night racing in Bakersfield. It was hot and humid, over 100 degrees and 90% humdity, however the GTO Keeps responding to small changes, and while Al has a misque, a Red blub in his gas class, the new car is going faster and quicker each time out. Al ran a 4.90 in the 1/8 mile in Outlaw 10.5 and was in the 1/4 Finals and qualified 6th, which was a big improvement from last month. When Al went red in his Gas class, he decided after a soft launch and a 2 Step to run it full throttle out the back door, to the amazement of all it ran 7.80 @ 177 M.P.H. on a 10” tire. Al says the G.T.O. will run A/Gas next year, a 7/.60 index, and now we believe he will! Al is still in 2nd place in the points in the Gas class, and 4th in Outlaw 10.5 which is really cool for a new car, and missing a few races while finishing the new car. This G.T.O. is still running a single quad and no blower or nitrous.
HAPPY MOTORING TO ALL

June
Al White was busy in May, finishing the new-old '65 GTO. Do you guys think Al likes '65 GTO's? Al finished the car, went testing, and then went to a P.S.C.A. race in Fontana. The new and lighter GTO ran an easy 8.20 E.T. at 166 MPH with about 3/4 power and a new engine, not broken in yet. Al signed up for B/Gas and had a tough time qualifying as he had to slow it down to an 8.60 index. On the last qualifier Al ran an 8.607, that earned us the #2 qualifying spot. That was really cool for the first time out in a brand new car.

Sunday was a strange day, wind, rain and full of excitement, everyone loved the new car, it is low and beautiful. Al will be the first to tell you he messed up in round one when he lost by a thousandth of a second, and he said he had a tenth in the bank and just misjudged it. At 165 MPH things happen pretty fast. As Al said before, he’s not after a championship this year, he’s going to try different classes and see where the car fits the best. On a side note, the car had 1.12 - 60 foot time which is getting close to where the pro stock cars leave.

Next we are going to Bakersfield to try a new class. Outlaw 10.5, which is a class for cars with blowers, nitrous, and turbos. Al will get a weight break because he only has one carb and no power aides. They will be running in the 7’s on a 10 inch tire. Al’s goal has been to be in the “Pro Show”, qualify and win a round or two, although Al knows he has no chance, it doesn’t stop him from trying. Bakersfield is a great venue for us because they always praise Al, and the ROAD KINGS OF BURBANK.

Happy Motoring
Norm

May
Al White and his good buddies, the other Alan and yours truly, Norm made the trek to Famoso Raceway for the first Westcoast Hot Rod Assc. race of 2010. Al and the old 65 G.T.O. did great and had a blast as always; we all did. Al entered 2 gas classes and qualified 2nd in one and middle of the field in the 2nd class. As you know Al is the current C/Gas champ, but this is a year for testing, as the new-old 65 G.T. O. will make its debeau in June with some good luck, and if Al doesn't go broke first. WE went to the semi's in one class and quarters in the other. AL was one fire with his reaction times, as you know by now he has been working hard to get the very heavy G.T.O to react to a pro 4 tenths tree' well either Al has succeeded in doing that or he had 10 cups of very strong coffee in him, because his worst light in competion was .015 with a hole bunch.004 and .005. His 1st run on Sunday was a 9.605 on a 9.60 index with .003 light. Al was on fire with the tree. The problem came when nice guy Al gave up the left lane to a friend. Al had lane choice all day, but never usually cares and almost always lets the other guy pick. This time it cost him, he forgot, and later confirmed in his notes that night that the right lane at Famoso is in fact a little quicker. Al went .004 red in the semis, and his statement in closing was "if I would have known I could get this 3400 lbs tank to go .004 red on a pro tree, I would have never built the new lighter G.T.O." However, A/Gas and B/Gas are going to be fun.           Norm

April
Al White and the guys loaded the G.T.O. and the trailer up, and off to Vegas for the first Race of the 2010 season. The weather was perfect, but the car had a few issues. During the coarse of freshening up the G.T.O. for the new season, Al made a few improvements, and this caused the engine to have a little more power, however, Al lost the RPM control of the launch and the shift light. This made the Qualifying very difficult as you must run as close to 9.60 E.T. as you can. After 2 runs of 9.30's and giant wheel-stands AL realized there was a real problem. We could not fix the problem at the track, so on to the 3rd and final qualifier. Al went old school and did the run [seat of the pants]. Al went a very cool 9.61 and went from last to 3rd in qualifying.

Sunday was great, Al went to the semifinals, and was happy that he went that far. Al lost when he went 005 Red. I asked Al why he was so happy after the loss, and he replied, "I did not think this 3400 lb Pontiac could go red on a Pro Tree, and also I can go home and see my new grandson Isaiah Alan White" who was born that weekend. See you all at the April meet.

P.S. Al found the electrical problem when he got home, a simple loose wire!

CONGRATULATIONS GRAMPS!
